(More customer reviews)I agree 100% with everything the first reviewer (Mr. Debraine) says. My hand is also 8 inches from base of palm to tip of longest finger. I took his advice about sizing and I confirm that he is correct; XL is just right for me even though I usually buy a Medium glove. If you have the same sized hand, and want to fit a thin kevlar liner inside, then you want to get XXL; I can only just get the gloves on over a thin woven kevlar liner, but I lose a lot of flexibility. It is not practical to wear both unless I go up a size.
It takes a minute for the shot to shuffle around and mold to the shape of the back of your hand when you put them on. The shot makes a very small sound (like very gently shaking a box of cornflakes) when you move quickly or rotate your wrists. So, do not buy these for silent work.
The extra weight in these gloves is not too much or too little; it is just right. You sure notice the difference when you take them off! When you throw a punch you feel the added weight. They are dexterous enough that you can type with them on; not that you would want to. They are light enough that they do not slow you down when moving quickly if you need to put your guard up or deliver a blow to an opponent.
Three quarters of the shot is on the back of the hand. That is well placed to line up with the meaty part of the chopping serface of your hand (between wrist and pinky) if you need to deliver an flat-handed chop to an attacker. They also do not restrict your motion if delivering an open-handed blow with the heel of the hand ...and obviously if you want to hit someone with your closed fists, they would be fine for that too.
The very first joint on each of the four fingers is lightly padded. There is double stitching on the palms and around the steel shot. The leather feels a little thin, and I can imagine I will wear through them within a year.
The package says "Made in Pakistan." It also says "Law Enforcement use only," though Amazon will ship to anyone if you ask them to!
Overall very happy with the gloves ...and with delivery from this vendor.
TEN MONTHS LATER: It's now (July 2008) ten months since my original review (Sept 2007). The gloves have held up much better than expected and are still in near new condition. No real sign of wear and tear. No thinning of the leather. Have taken them to a heavy punching bag a few times and they felt great. Still very happy.
ANOTHER YEAR LETER: It's now (August 2009) and two years since my purchase. The gloves are holding up extremely well. I would happliy buy the same again. I have not figured out whether it is steel or lead shot in them. They make a satisfying KLUNK if you drop them on a wooden floor.
